Heron Kids Junior Rangers: As a true coral cay right on the Great Barrier Reef within a Marine National Park, Heron Island offers young visitors lots of interesting and educational experiences. Children aged 7 to 12 can join in the fun and discovery of Heron's Junior Ranger Program during Australian eastern seaboard school holidays (or on request if there's at least three participants).
The kids enjoy hands-on activities and have the chance to earn a colourful collection of 15 badges. They'll get 'up close and personal' with a wonderful variety of marine creatures and explore the fascinating coral cay forest and woodlands. During turtle season (November to April), they can even join the Queensland Turtle Research program's research and monitoring activities.
From reef walks and snorkelling to turtle tagging, charting the night sky and 'piloting' a helicopter, these fun, practical experiences nuture a sense of exploration and caring for the environment.
A one-off registration fee applies for each Junior Ranger participant with fees generating funds for the Queensland Turtle Conservation Program. Registration costs cover Junior Ranger activities, workbook and badges.
The Junior Rangers program was designed by naturalist Sandy McFeeters in cooperation with the University of Queensland Research Station and Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service.
